JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A notorious commander of the Islamic State group, also known as Daesh, has shot dead nearly a dozen associates in easte Nangarhar province, an official said on Friday.
Commander Zamin Jan, alias Abu Bakar, gued down 11 of his men in the Karkana area of Achin district on Friday night, Attaullah Khogyani, the goveor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Elsewhere in the province, the head of the Hewad Foundation teaching centre came under armed attack in Kama district.
Ilham Yasini said gunmen fired at him from a nearby mountain on Thursday evening when he was going home.
He escaped unhurt, but some of the bullets hit his vehicle, Yasini said, adding the teaching centre in Kama had 600 male and female students.
He claimed receiving threats over the telephone from unknown individuals, who demanded the closure of the girls’ section.

KABUL
(Pajhwok): NATO foreign ministers, at their meeting in Brussels, are reviewing the progress of the Resolute Support mission and the need to continue financial assistance for Afghan forces.
US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters in Brussels ahead of Friday’s session he would reiterate America’s commitment to maintain 9,800 troops in Afghanistan through most of the current year and 5,500 thereafter.
Sounding upbeat about the Warsaw Summit,Kerry said the foreign ministers would make sure that the event had the ingredients of success.He said 3,400 of the remaining troops would be assigned to NATO responsibilities.
He said NATO was enhancing its forward presence in the east of Europe. “It is why we are projecting stability in the south. And it is why we are deepening our cooperation with the European Union and the counter-Daesh coalition.”
He would attend a French conference next month aimed at reviving peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, Kerry said, defending the Obama administration’s efforts to move the dialogue forward.

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): The elderly father of a policeman, who died in a 2014 Taliban suicide attack in central Logar province, says the ‘martyrdom booklet’ of his son is yet to be prepared.
The suicide attack was carried out Feb 20, 2014 on the police headquarters in Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital. Fifteen people, including policemen, were killed in the attack.
The blast also snatched the eldest son of Syed Sher Ahmad, a 76-year-old resident of Logar province. The father said his son was the only breadwier for the family.
Speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News during an interview, Ahmad said: “We would always wait for him that he would come home after getting salary and would bring what we need.”
The father said since the death of his son, they had been leading a miserable life. A resident of Kalingar area of Pul-i-Alam, Ahmad said his son, Shafiqullah, was a trainer at the police training academy.
Shafiqullah left behind his wife and three children, including two daughters. Sher Ahmad said he was old and could not support the orphaned children.
The father burst into tears as he recalled the death of his son. “He was young and we endured many hardships seeing him grow up and get education. He would perform his duty with honesty and passion to ea a legitimate living for the family, but the barbaric forces claimed his life.”
The day Shafiqullah died. “That moing he left home for job happily. It was mid-day when we were informed about his death and a few hours later his mutilated body arrived home in coffin,” recalled Sher Ahmad.
The father said his son died for the country and the people, but after his death no govement official or organisation had inquired after their situation.
“I am an old person and caot support the 10-member family including the children and widowed wife of my son. I don’t own any land and have no income and caot do a job.”
The father complained the govement used its workers like fuel as when they were alive, there were required and once dead, they were forgotten.
He said besides his son, his other family members had also been killed during the past four years, but govement officials even did not attend funeral prayers.
“A few members of our family who had police jobs had been killed, I can no longer tolerate such painful events. God should take my life so I can get rid of this sorrowful life.”
He said he had been busy over the past 14 months visiting govement offices to get completed his son’s martyrdom booklet.
He said he used to visit daily a govement office and every time he was cheated and there were injustices everywhere.
Sher Ahmad urged the govement to assist him and all families whose police sons had been killed.
Logar goveor’s spokesman Salim Saleh told Pajhwok Afghan News that families of those killed in terrorist attacks were given 100,000 afghanis each under ‘presidential code 93.’ But he said it was an exclusive process and took some time to complete.
The official said the provincial administration lacked resources to provide additional assistance to such families.

KABUL (Pajhwok): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wished President Ashraf Ghani a happy birthday for a second time this year.
However, this time around, Modi got the date right -- unlike the February 12 tweet. Then the suave Afghan leader had said his birthday was on May 19.
Following his February gaffe, a flurry of jokes, light-vein Idea and caution urged Modi not to depend so heavily on online searches.
Now that he is on the dot, Modi’scomeback has triggered over 600 re-tweets and around 2,000 likes within a couple of hours, according to NDTV.
Ghani’s profile on Google erroneously lists his birthday as being on Feb. 12. Modi’s error had been spotted by plenty of people.

KABUL (Pajhwok): The govement has decided to mange Afghanistan’s water resources in line with inteational rules, President Ashraf Ghani said on Wednesday.
Ghani, who met a special delegation of the Ministry of Energy and Water at the Presidential Palace, was presented a technical study report on the Harirod River zone in weste Herat province, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.
The president praised the study and investigation of the ministry’s technical team and assigned the team with thoroughly studying the Hirmand zone in southe Helmand province as well.
“Afghanistan’s water was earlier distributed traditionally but from now on the country’s water will be organised in compliance with inteational regulations.”
The topic would be also discussed in Cabinet meetings, Ghani said, adding his govement was making its efforts at managing the country’s water with a capable administration to increase irrigation water and produce power.
Ghani said the Ministry of Water and Energy would be provided necessary equipment for studying the country’s water resources and recruiting technical advisers.
Official statistics show in average 58 billion cubic metres of water is produced in Afghanistan but only 30 percent of it is used inside the country and the rest flows into neighboring Iran and Pakistan because of a lack of facilities and infrastructure.

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Omar Zakhiwal on Wednesday met the US special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan hours before attending a fifth round of the four-nation talks in Islamabad.
The Afghan Embassy in Islamabad in a statement said Zakhilwal discussed with the US special envoy the fifth meeting of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) that began in Islamabad this afteoon.
The group, made up of officials from Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United States and China, has been engaged in efforts to facilitate direct talks between the Afghan govement and the Taliban.
The Afghan govement has said its ambassador in Islamabad would represent the country in the latest talks and refused to send its delegation until Pakistan lives up to its promises of crackdown on Taliban militants on its soil.
But Pakistan says the use of force against Afghan Taliban is unviable until all peaceful options are exhausted.
Zakhilwal also discussed other important subjects with Daniel F. Feldman, the statement said, without giving further details.
A day earlier, Zakhiwal said he would lead the Afghan delegating in the latest four-way talks and would insist on implementation of the agreed roadmap for peace.
He had said the roadmap approved in the group’s meeting in February had not been implemented.
The four-nation group was created after the Heart of Asia conference in December 2015 on Afghanistan and since then the group had held four meetings in Islamabad and Kabul.
The last meeting of the group that took place in Kabul in March had decided that Pakistan would bring the Taliban to the negotiating table for direct talks with the Afghan govement and would take action against irreconcilable elements.
